History and Purpose

Known for his passionate advocacy of the environment, nature photographer Art Wolfe created a conservation-themed photo contest in 1997 as “an event for the advancement of photography as a unique medium capable of bringing awareness and preservation to our environment through art.”

The 2012 International Conservation Photography Awards is a continuation of Art Wolfe's vision and has become a biennial (every two years) international event. Each year the ICP Awards strives to increase its reach and influence to photographers from around the world as well as to diverse audiences who will be inspired by the work – and the 2010 program exemplified that effort stunningly by the quality and number of images submitted by photographers from a record number of countries throughout the globe. Moreover the Burke Museum of History and Culture mounted a breathtakingly beautiful show in 2010, so we're thrilled to continue that partnership. How the Burke can top last time we have no idea, but be prepared again for another world-class exhibit at the Burke opening in June, 2012, and this year running for 5 months, through Thanksgiving 2012.

The ICP Awards are open to all photographers worldwide.

ICP Awards Administrators

The ICP Awards grew in both quality and complexity in 2010 – and two people provided the necessary steam for implementing this multi-layered program with a global reach. It requires nearly two years to plan and implement each successful biennial program.

Chris Gorley, director

Chris' career has largely been devoted to communications, public relations and brand marketing for both small non-profit organizations and a major international brand. Her interest in international film, especially incisive documentary filmmaking, underlies her belief that visual storytelling has the greatest chance of any medium to impart important messages and change behavior. Chris is a volunteer and gardener in her local organic P-Patch.
